7th Pay Commission: The decision to increase Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for central employees and pensioners has not been taken yet. This big announcement was expected before Holi, but the decision has been postponed for about a week. Then there were reports that after the Union Cabinet meeting on March 19, good news for the employees could be announced. But this also did not happen. Now according to a report by Financial Express, the government can approve it at any time and this decision took time due to government processes and financial approvals.

DA increases twice a year

This allowance is directly linked to the basic salary of the government employee and is increased twice a year. The government revises the DA to reduce the impact of inflation on employees and pensioners. Usually, the government announces DA hike for January-June before Holi and July-December before Diwali. But this time, the hike for the January-June 2025 cycle could not be announced before Holi. It is believed that a 2% hike is possible, which will increase DA from 53% to 55%. A 2% hike in DA is expected for July-December 2024 based on AICPI (All-India Consumer Price Index data).

When will the DA hike decision come?

It is reported that the government may approve it in the next cabinet meeting to be held next week. After approval, the increased DA will come into effect from January 2025 and employees can also get the arrears of January, February and March when they get the salary for the month of April. If the basic salary is Rs 18,000, then a 2% hike will increase the salary by Rs 360 per month, that is, an additional benefit of Rs 4,320 will be available in a year. Similarly, if the basic pension is Rs 9,000, there will be an increase of Rs 180 per month, which will give a benefit of Rs 2,160 annually.
