8th pay Commission Latest News: If you are also waiting for the 8th Pay Commission, then this news is for you. The government had announced the formation of the 8th Pay Commission last month and said that a two-member panel and a chairman would be appointed for it soon. But it has become clear from the Union Budget presented on Saturday that the 8th Pay Commission will not be implemented from January 1, 2026.
Actually, central government employees and pensioners had high hopes regarding the 8th Pay Commission. They were hoping that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman would announce a roadmap and budgetary allocation for salary and pension revision in her Union Budget 2025. But this did not happen.
Currently, the term of the 7th Pay Commission is ending on 31 December 2025. Due to which it was being speculated that the 8th Pay Commission could be implemented from 1 January 2026. But the government has not made any allocation for it in this budget, which indicates that provision will be made for it only in the budget of 2026-27.
Where is the problem?
According to media reports, it may take at least a year to prepare and finalise the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. Moneycontrol quoted Expenditure Secretary Manoj Goel as saying that the Union Budget for 2025-26 does not account for any expenditure related to the 8th Pay Commission, as the Pay Commission report is expected to take at least a year to be finalised and approved.
For this, the Finance Ministry has sought suggestions from the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs and Department of Personnel and Training. The work of the Commission will formally begin only after receiving inputs from these departments.
What is the past record?
If we look at the previous pay commissions, they took more than a year to give recommendations. For example, the 7th Pay Commission took more than 18 months to prepare its report. In such a situation, it can be assumed that the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are unlikely in the financial year 2025-26.
