8th Pay Commission News: Crores of central government employees and pensioners across the country have been waiting for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission for a long time. After its implementation, there will be a big increase in their basic salary (8th Pay Commission Basic Salary) and other allowances. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave a big update on this in Parliament.
What did the Finance Minister say on the 8th Pay Commission?
The Finance Minister said that inputs have been sought from many important ministries including the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) regarding the Terms of Reference of the 8th Pay Commission . The complete picture of changes in salary and pension will be clear only after the recommendations of the commission are received and accepted by the government.
He also said that at present there are about 36.57 lakh central government employees (till 1 March 2025) and 33.91 lakh pensioners (till 31 December 2024) in India. Apart from this, defense employees and their pensioners will also get benefits from this pay commission.
Approval was given for the formation of 8th Pay Commission in January 2025 itself
In the Rajya Sabha, the Finance Minister clarified that the Central Government is fully committed to pension parity. He also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission (8th CPC) in January 2025 itself.

All government pensioners will get equal benefit
The objective of this commission is to revise the salaries and allowances of Central Government Employees and pensioners. The Finance Minister said that such rules have been made in the Finance Bill passed by the Lok Sabha so that all government pensioners get equal benefits and there is no discrimination of any kind among them.
What changes have been made regarding pension?
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that all government pensioners who retired before and after 1 January 2016 are getting the same pension. Under the new rules, no change has been made in the existing pension amount of any pensioner. Defense pensioners will also not be affected because different rules apply for them.
The Finance Minister said that the 6th Pay Commission had differentiated between the pension of employees who retired before and after 1 January 2006. At that time, the Congress-led UPA government had implemented these rules. However, the 7th Pay Commission in the first term of the Modi government ended this discrimination and made the pension of pensioners who retired before and after 1 January 2016 equal.
8th Pay Commission committee will be formed soon
Soon a committee of a chairperson and at least two members will be formed for the 8th Central Pay Commission. This committee will discuss with all the concerned parties and give its recommendations regarding salary and pension revision. After this, the government will consider these recommendations and then the final decision will be taken.
