Will the 8th Pay Commission be limited to just increasing the salary, or is the government going to change the old health scheme like CGHS? Discussions are in full swing to bring new medical facilities. But will CGHS really end?
8th Pay Commission: Central government employees and pensioners are waiting for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. Earlier there were reports that the government could announce it in the first week of April i.e. at the beginning of the new financial year. But till now there has been no update from the government. There are reports that the 8th Pay Commission may recommend the abolition of CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme).
Will a new health scheme replace CGHS?
CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) is a medical facility scheme, which provides treatment, medicines and doctor’s advice to central government employees, their families and retired people at very low prices. Now news is coming that the government can end CGHS and start a new health scheme. It is believed that these changes can be a part of the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission.
The talk of removing CGHS has come up earlier as well
This is not the first time that the discussion of removing CGHS is taking place. The 5th, 6th and 7th Pay Commissions had also suggested that some other scheme should be brought in its place, because CGHS does not have a reach across the country and many people have difficulty in joining it. Many government employees and their families are not able to take full advantage of this health service.
There was a discussion of a new scheme in January as well
According to the report of Financial Express, in January this year, it was discussed that the Health Ministry could bring a new insurance scheme in place of CGHS, which would be only for government employees. But at present these were just talks, no decision was taken.
Now eyes are on the Terms of Reference of the Pay Commission
Now everyone’s eyes are on when the government approves the Terms of Reference (ToR) regarding the functioning of the 8th Pay Commission. After the cabinet’s approval, its official notification will be issued and the commission will start its work. Only after that any official update related to the recommendations is expected.
