8th Pay Commission Employees Salary Hike : The central government has announced the 8th Pay Commission. Employees are still waiting for the official announcement of its formation and guidelines from the government. According to reports, employee organizations have demanded a uniform fitment factor at all salary levels.

8th pay commission status

In January 2025, the government announced the 8th Pay Commission for salary and pension structure revision of central employees and pensioners. However, its terms and conditions (ToR) and members of the commission are yet to be announced. Shiv Gopal Mishra, Staff Side Secretary, National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), demanded uniform fitment factor, saying that this would reduce the pay gap between different pay levels.

Changes as compared to 7th Pay Commission

  • In the 7th Pay Commission the fitment factor was different for different pay levels.
  • Pay Band 1 (Grade Pay Rs.1800): 2.57 fitment factor
  • Pay Band 2 (Grade Pay Rs. 4200): 2.62 fitment factor
  • Pay Band 3: 2.67 Fitment Factor

In this, rational increase in salary was decided with increase in responsibility and accountability in higher posts.

Will there be benefit of 50% salary hike?

The fitment factor can be from 2.28 to 2.86

According to media reports, the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission can be fixed between 2.28 to 2.86, due to which the basic salary of central employees can increase by 40-50%.

Change in fitment factor of pay commissions

  • Sixth Pay Commission: 1.86 fitment factor
  • 7th Pay Commission: 2.57 fitment factor (average 23.55% pay hike)
  • 8th Pay Commission (Expected): 2.28 to 2.86 fitment factor (40-50% salary hike expected)

The fitment factor is an important multiple for deciding the salary structure. It has increased with every pay commission. This leads to a significant increase in the salary of the employees. The terms of the 8th Pay Commission are not yet clear, but experts believe that employees can get a salary hike of up to 40-50%. It will be clear only after the official announcement of the government how much this salary hike will be and how it will be implemented.
