8th Pay Commission: The Central Government had approved the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025. However, till now no official notification has been issued regarding its formation and roadmap. Meanwhile, the demand for applying a uniform fitment factor to all posts from the unions representing the central employees is gaining momentum. Let us understand what can be the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission and how much can be the basic salary according to that.

What is the fitment factor?

Fitment Factor is the standard coefficient, on the basis of which the old basic salary of the employees is converted into the new basic salary. Its determination is different in every pay commission.

General formula:

New basic salary = old basic salary × fitment factor

What was the fitment factor in the 7th Pay Commission?

The fitment factor in the 7th Pay Commission was kept at 2.57. For example, if an employee’s old basic salary was ₹10,000, then the new salary would be:

₹10,000 × 2.57 = ₹25,700

What can change in the 8th Pay Commission?

According to media reports, the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission is likely to be up to a maximum of 2.86. If this is implemented, the basic salary of the employees may increase significantly.

For example, if the current basic salary is ₹20,000, the new salary will be:

₹20,000 × 2.86 = ₹57,200

When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?

The government has not yet taken any decision regarding the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. After the formation of the Pay Commission, it will submit its recommendations to the government. Then the government will take a decision on the salary hike as per its convenience.

According to sources, the 8th Pay Commission may be implemented from 2026 or 2027. Under this, along with revision of the salary structure of the employees, Performance-Related Pay (PRP) can also be recommended.
