  • The government announced the 7th Pay Commission in September 2013, while the committee was constituted in February 2014, taking about five months.
  • The Sixth Pay Commission was announced in July 2006 and the committee was constituted in October 2006, after a gap of merely three months.
  • In April 1994, the 5th Pay Commission was announced, followed by the formation of the committee in June 1994, which took only two months.

Millions of employees benefit

Looking at the past trends, it is expected that a committee is likely to be formed in the coming months. However, since there is no fixed timeline, the formation of the committee will depend on many factors including the economic situation. Let us tell you that this move will benefit about 50 lakh central government employees and about 65 lakh pensioners.

Under the Seventh Pay Commission, the expenditure in the financial year 2016-17 was increased by Rs 1 lakh crore. The government has constituted seven pay commissions since 1947. The Pay Commission plays an important role in deciding the salary structure, benefits and allowances for government employees. Most of the units owned by the state governments follow the recommendations of the commission.
