Air Taxi in India: People in India are troubled by the problems of traffic jams every day. People stuck in long jams for miles sit in their vehicles for hours. However, now perhaps they can get relief from this problem. That is, people can reach their office or airport in a few minutes without getting stuck in traffic jams.

Actually, Chennai-based startup The ePlane Co is all set to make this dream come true. This startup is preparing to turn the first electric air taxi made in India into reality and for this it will prepare three prototypes in the next two years.

The first air taxi will be launched by 2026

The ePlane Co has raised $20 million so far and is now looking for new funding of $30-50 million. Speaking to Mint, the company’s founder Satyanarayan Chakravarthy said that they are ready to take up to $100 million in the next round of investment. He said that the first commercial air taxi service could start by the end of 2026 or early 2027.

First air taxi startup in India

The ePlane Co, incubated at IIT-Madras, is developing India’s first ‘Made-in-India’ air taxi. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued three major rules for air taxis – aircraft standards, landing ports, pilot training. Five testing sites are being prepared in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, where testing of air taxis will start later this year.

Entry in the international market

The ePlane Co is ready to spread its wings not only in India but also in many countries of the world. Recently the company announced its expansion in UAE, Indonesia and Thailand. Talks are also going on with the Civil Aviation Authority in Malaysia and Singapore. Indonesia’s DGCA wants the company to work on the same model there too after getting approval for air taxi in India. The company has signed a $1 billion agreement with ICATT (International Critical-care Air Transfer Team), under which 788 air ambulances will be supplied.

Why are air taxis necessary?

According to a report by the World Economic Forum, cities like Bangalore suffer a loss of $2.3 billion every year due to traffic jams. Air taxis can travel from the city to the airport in just a few minutes. Metro and road transport are not fast, but air taxis can be the solution to this problem.

Who else is in the air taxi race?

Currently, the biggest competitor of The ePlane Co in India is Bangalore-based Sarla Aviation. Sarla has recently raised $10 million in funding. UK’s Archer Aviation has signed a deal for 300 air taxis with IndiGo’s parent company Interglobe Aviation.
