Air Train Update: You must have heard about trains and airplanes many times, but have you heard about air trains? Now in a few years, India is going to get its first air train. Air train which is often referred to as Sky Train at many airports around the world.
Air Train Update: India’s first air train will be based on an automated system designed to enhance connectivity between terminals at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). It will be a 7.7 km long automated people mover connecting Terminal 2/3 and 1.
Air train which is often referred to as Sky Train at many airports around the world. This train runs with the help of an automated people mover (APM) system. Its main purpose is to ease the movement of passengers from one terminal to another, thereby significantly reducing the time taken by them.
According to the report, India’s first air train will pass under the planes running on the elevated taxiway at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport by the year 2028. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has issued tenders for the construction of a 7.7 km Automated People Mover (APM).

The Air Train will be primarily elevated, with 5.7 km of its route elevated and 2 km at ground level. The ground level sections will be before Terminal 1 and below the elevated taxiway. A skywalk is planned at the cargo station to connect the Air Train to the cargo terminal. According to media sources, the Air Train will be available free of cost to all passengers travelling between the terminals, as Air Trains are free of cost for passengers in other countries as well.
The Air Train project is estimated to cost up to Rs 1,500-1,600 crore. During PM Modi’s second term, the aviation ministry had disallowed charging extra from passengers to fund the project and advised the airport operating company to first build it and then recover the cost.
