Why is there a need to improve the runway?
According to an airport official, ‘The existing runway has given good service for years. But now maintenance is necessary to maintain its quality and meet safety features.’ The runway will be upgraded to increase better structure, friction, strength, and operational efficiency. Along with this, related repairs will also be done.
Runway status
The length of the existing runway is 2,744 meters and the width is 45 meters. A 7.5 meter wide shoulder has been given on each side. It was last recarpeted in 2018. Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport usually handles 140 flights every day. But this number will decrease during the repair.
What will happen in the runway improvement work?
Under the maintenance of the runway, the existing bituminous runway will be removed and a new bituminous layer will be laid so that it is in line with regulatory standards. A total of 1.80 lakh square meters of area including the runway and taxiway will be reconstructed. A new full-length parallel taxiway of 2,744 meters will be constructed, which will speed up the movement of aircraft after landing and take-off.
