Airport New Rule: While the growing demand for wheelchairs at the airport is due to the genuine need of some passengers, some are misusing it to avoid long lines and early boarding. Air India alone receives more than 1 lakh wheelchair requests every month.
Airport Rule Changed: A tremendous increase in the demand for wheelchairs is being seen at major airports in India. Especially in flights going to the US and the UK, every third passenger is asking for wheelchair assistance. However, while this growing demand is due to the genuine need of some passengers, some are misusing it to avoid long lines and early boarding. In such a situation, the government is preparing to revise the guidelines to prevent this misuse and ensure that the genuinely needy people are not stranded.
Will have to pay a fee
According to a Hindustan Times report, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently finalizing a new framework, which is expected to be implemented by the end of May. Under the upcoming policy, free wheelchair service may be limited to passengers aged 60 years or above, while younger passengers may be required to show a valid medical certificate. At the same time, there is also a plan to charge a nominal fee from passengers seeking wheelchair assistance till the boarding gate.
Actually, this proposal is being made after the growing resentment of passengers for wheelchair service.
Possible solutions/measures to prevent misuse-
- Age limit: There is also a suggestion to set an age limit for wheelchair assistance. Only people aged 60 years or above will be automatically eligible for free wheelchair facility.
- Medical proof: If younger passengers demand wheelchair assistance, airlines may ask for medical documentation from them.
- Cart service: Buggy or cart service can be started at airports so that elderly passengers do not have to walk long distances.
- Paid assistance: A low-cost option can be offered for those who do not meet the criteria but need a wheelchair.
- Responsibility of passengers: It is also the responsibility of the passengers to make proper use of wheelchair assistance. This facility is for those who find it difficult to walk at the airport, not for those who simply want to avoid early boarding or immigration lines.
