Airport Latest News: According to Delhi International Airport Limited, Delhi Airport handles about 1,300 flights every day. T1 has an annual capacity of 40 million and T2 has a capacity of 15 million. At the same time, T3 is handling 45 million passengers.
Delhi Airport: If you travel from Delhi airport then this news is important for you. Major upgrade work is going to be done at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Due to this, Terminal 2 (T2) will be temporarily closed for 4-5 months from April, so that the infrastructure of the airport can be improved.
Apart from this, a runway will also be upgraded during this time. The runway will be upgraded to ILS (Instrument Landing System), making it CAT III B compliant. This means that flights can be operated smoothly even in dense fog or low visibility. Flight operations at Delhi Airport are often affected due to fog in winter, but after this upgrade, passengers will get relief from this problem.
Videh Kumar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), said that the renovation work of Terminal 1 (T1) is expected to be completed by March 15 and it will be restarted after getting the necessary approval. At the same time, T2 operations will remain temporarily closed. During this time, the passenger capacity of T2 (about 15 million) will be shifted to T1.
Plan to make the airport an aviation hub
Videh Kumar further said that DIAL aims to develop Delhi Airport as an aviation hub. For this, there is a plan to prepare four ‘slot banks’ by the year 2025. Slot bank means ensuring better connectivity of flights within a specific time. This will make it easier for passengers to catch transit flights and flight operations will also be more smooth.
In view of the increasing air traffic, a plan has been made to completely convert a part of the T3 terminal for international flights. Currently, this section is used for domestic operations.
According to Delhi International Airport Limited, Delhi Airport handles around 1,300 flights every day. T1 has an annual capacity of 40 million and T2 has a capacity of 15 million. At the same time, T3 was designed for 34 million international passengers, but currently it is handling 45 million passengers.
Rapid increase in the number of international passengers
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar said that the number of international passengers is increasing rapidly. Every day about 67,000-68,000 international passengers travel, which is equivalent to about 24 million annually. But the current capacity of T3 is only 20 million international passengers, so it has been decided to convert the ‘Pier C’ section of T3 into an international terminal. This will increase the international passenger capacity to 32 million and the challenge of increasing traffic can be handled for the next 4-5 years.
