Ahead of the Delhi assembly elections due next year, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced that electricity power subsidy will be extended for tenants. From now on, tenants can install prepaid meters which will be used for domestic purposes.’Tenants will have to get prepaid meter installed after depositing security money of ₹3,000,” said Kejriwal.
Under ‘Mukhyamantri Kirayedaar Bijli Meter Yojna’, meters will be programmed in a way that up to 200 units will be free. Those in Delhi, who consume up to 200 units of electricity, need not pay their electricity bills. If a consumer uses 201 units in a month, he/she has to pay the bill. While addressing the media, Kejriwal said rent agreement and rent receipt will be needed to install the new electricity meters. Tenants across the city will not require any No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their landlords, said Kejriwal.
Earlier, the Delhi government had announced free electricity for people consuming up to 200 units per month. Those who consume between 201 and 400 units would be given a 50% subsidy by the state government. The free power decision is expected to cost ₹1,800-2,000 crore annually, Kejriwal said.
Till now, tenants were not able to avail the Delhi government’s power subsidy scheme. There will be no hike in electricity tariff for the fifth consecutive year in Delhi.
Soon after coming to power in 2015, the government had announced a 50% subsidy on monthly power consumption of up to 400 units and 20,000 litres of free water per month to all households.
