As BJP struggles to reach half-way mark in Haryana, JJP’s Dushyant Chautala could play kingmaker

Dushyant Chautala told reporters that his party would change Haryana’s political landscape and took a swipe at the BJP’s claim to cross the 75-seat mark in the 90-member House.

With the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections proving to be more closely contested than many pundits had predicted, Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) could play an important role in government formation. To be sure, the BJP still has the best chance of forming the government, but the saffron party is clearly falling far short of the much-touted 75-plus mark.

The Jat vote that might have gone to the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is clearly going to the JJP, which split from the INLD last December.

Speaking to reporters, Chautala said his party would change Haryana’s political landscape and took a swipe at the BJP’s claim to cross the 75-seat mark in the 90-member House.

Speaking in the Jat-dominated Jind, Dushyant Chautala said his party was getting the affection of Haryana’s voters and the trends of Thursday morning were a sign of change.

If the JJP ends up getting more than 10 seats and the BJP falls short of the 46-mark needed to win the election, Dushyant may call the shots in deciding who gets to sit on the CM’s chair in Haryana.

In the past 10 years, Haryana’s political landscape has seen a sea change. The BJP, which was a bit player till the 2009 polls, became the state’s most dominant party in 2014, doing very well in both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in wake of the Modi wave.

Meanwhile, the  INLD’s vote share collapsed in the 2019 Lok Sabha vote after its split. But now it seems Dushyant is taking on the mantle of his great-grandfather Devi Lal’s legacy, the tallest Jat leaders in the history of Haryana who went on to become the country’s deputy prime minister.

Dushyant, who was expelled from the INLD last year, along with brother Digvijay and father Ajay, after an ugly family feud, formed the JJP and is contesting elections from Uchana Kalan constituency. Facing him is BJP MLA Prem Lata, also from the Jat community.
