Ayusman Bharat Scheme: Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is the world’s largest health insurance scheme. Its goal is to provide free treatment of up to ₹ 5 lakh every year to 12 crore poor and vulnerable families (about 55 crore people) of the country.

Ayusman Bharat Scheme in Delhi: The new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has approved the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in its first meeting itself. The first meeting of the cabinet of the new government began on Thursday evening under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. During the recently concluded assembly elections, BJP leaders had promised to implement the Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Scheme in the first cabinet meeting.

Addressing her first press conference, Rekha Gupta said that the previous Aam Aadmi Party government did not allow the health scheme to be implemented in the city, due to which people could not get its benefits.

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a major scheme of the government. It provides health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to about 55 crore beneficiaries from 12.37 crore families of the country’s economically weaker 40 percent population.

What is Ayushman Bharat Yojana?

Ayushman Bharat is the flagship scheme of the Government of India, which was launched based on the recommendations of the National Health Policy 2017. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ranchi, Jharkhand on 23 September 2018. The scheme aims to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), i.e. to provide better health facilities to every citizen.

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is the world’s largest health insurance scheme. Its goal is to provide free treatment of up to ₹5 lakh every year to 12 crore poor and vulnerable families of the country (about 55 crore people).

Which families get the benefit?

The beneficiaries of this scheme have been selected as per the Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 (SECC 2011). People working in the unorganized sector and economically weaker sections in both rural and urban areas are covered under this scheme. PM-JAY was earlier known as the National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS). It has been linked to the National Health Insurance Scheme (RSBY) launched in 2008. That is, families included in RSBY also get benefits under PM-JAY, even if they are not in the SECC 2011 data.

Citizens above 70 years of age also benefit

In September 2024, the central government approved health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 years and above regardless of income under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

With this approval, all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status, will be eligible to avail AB PM-JAY. Senior citizens aged 70 years and above from families already covered under AB PM-JAY will get an additional top-up cover of up to ₹5 lakh per year for themselves.
