PIB has said that this message going viral on social media is fake. Now the question arises that where did this figure of 75 years come from. The viral message on social media reads- “Big announcement of the central government – these people will not have to pay tax. Modi government Senior citizens of the country will not have to pay tax, because on completion of 75 years of India’s independence, senior citizens above the age of 75 will no longer have to pay tax on their income. Senior citizens in India live on income from pension and other schemers, they do not have to pay any tax on their income and they will not have to file income tax returns because senior citizens are exempted from it. According to the information given by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the government has changed the law to give tax exemption to senior citizens. Important changes between Rule 31. Rule 31A. Form 16 and 24Q and a citizen of the age of 75 will have to submit a 12-BBA application in the bank to get tax exemption.”

PIB has called this claim fake. PIB has said that people above 75 years of age are exempted from filing income tax returns under section 194P on income from pension and interest.
