Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the decision to stop Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief was taken due to Covid-19 to ease the pressure on government financial resources. He said that in view of the crisis arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was necessary to mobilize resources in various possible ways, which also included reduction in the salary of Members of Parliament by 30% for a period of 12 months from 01.04.2020 to 31.03.2021. .
MPs’ salary also cut
Sitharaman has said that the salaries of Union Ministers are at the same rate specified in Section 3 of the Salaries, Allowances and Pensions of Members of Parliament Act, 1954. Since the salary payable to Members of Parliament was reduced by 30%, the salaries of Union Ministers were also reduced by 30%. No pay deduction or DA was deducted in respect of subordinate employees. He got full salary and DA. Only the additional increase in DA was stopped from 01.01.2020 to 30,06.2021.
Increased dearness allowance
He informed that the Government has released the installments of Dearness Allowance/Dearness Relief from 01 July 2021 of the Central Government, which were due from 01.01.2020, 01.07.2020 and 01.01.2021. Central Government employees/pensioners will get Dearness Allowance/Dearness Relief from July, 2021 at the rate of 28% (11% over the existing rate of 17%). The rate of Dearness Allowance for the period from 01.01.2020 to 30.06.2021 will remain at 17%.
34402.32 crore saving amount
He informed that due to withholding of 3 installments of Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief payable to Central Government employees and pensioners from 01.01.2020, 01.07.2020 and 01.01.2021, an amount of Rs.34402.32 crore has been saved.
