The scheme was started by the Central Government in March 2020 to provide free food grains to 80 crore beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act. The purpose of this scheme was to reduce the problems of the needy people during the epidemic. Under this scheme, the government gives 5 kg additional food grains per person free of cost. This is in addition to the normal foodgrain allocation under NFSA at the rate of 2 to 3 kg.
