Meanwhile, the state government has taken a big decision regarding the DA increase of its employees. The CM said that the increased dearness allowance for government employees and pensioners will be extended for three months and will be implemented from January 1, 2022.
Chief Minister MK Stalin had announced in the assembly that the enhanced dearness allowance for government employees and pensioners would be extended by three months and would be implemented from January 1, 2022. The Chief Minister said that in the revised budget (2021-22) it was announced to increase the DA of employees and pensioners with effect from April 1, 2022. However, considering the representations received from unions of government employees, the DA hike will be implemented for them and pensioners with effect from January 1, 2022, despite severe financial constraints.
The move will benefit 16 lakh government employees and pensioners and the hike in dearness allowance will lead to an additional expenditure of Rs 1,620 crore for three months and Rs 6,480 crore for one year. An office-bearer of a government employees’ union said the DA is expected to be increased at par with the Center’s announcement of 11 per cent in line with the practice so far.
He said that usually, the state government announces the DA hike soon after the Centre’s announcement. This is the first time we are seeing such a scenario. Unions of government employees are demanding an increase of 11 per cent DA. Effective July 1, 2021, the Center had announced an 11 per cent increase (from 17 per cent to 28 per cent) in DA and dearness relief to central government employees and pensioners, respectively.
