Pensioners have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make pension free from income tax.
Pensioners’ body Indian Pensioners’ Forum has written a letter to the Prime Minister on August 25 in this regard. The letter argued that when the pension of MPs and MLAs is not taxed, why does the government charge income tax on pension received by retired employees.
The letter states that pension is paid to every retired person for years of service to the country. The forum said, “Now the question arises as to why income tax is levied on retired employees. It is not income from any service or work. If the pension of MPs and MLAs is tax free, then why is our pension taxed.
Pension should be exempt from income tax
The Pensioners’ Forum, in its first All India Conference in Shirdi, Maharashtra on July 23, 2018, had proposed that pensions should be exempted from income tax. Since then this issue has been continuously raised by the organization with the Finance Minister as well. In the letter, an appeal has been made to the Prime Minister to intervene in this issue. The forum said it had written letters to the finance minister on the issue on August 23, 2018, December 14, 2018 and February 25, 2021. The forum said that nothing has been done so far on the issue.
