CBSE Board Exam Rule Changed: CBSE is considering reducing the duration of class 10th exam from a month to less than two weeks so that exams can be conducted twice a year.
CBSE Board Exam Rule Changed: To conduct exams twice a year from next year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering reducing the duration of class 10th exam from a month to less than two weeks. Currently, the datesheet of class 10th board exam is prepared in such a way that the papers of two subjects chosen by the student do not fall on the same date. This stretches the exam schedule for a month. Sometimes there is a gap of three to 10 days between two papers. As can be seen this time also that CBSE 10th board exams started from February 15 and will continue till March 18.
The news published in the Indian Express quoted sources as saying that if the system of conducting exams twice a year is introduced, the CBSE board may have to reduce the gap between the papers significantly, perhaps even by a day, so that both exams can be conducted and all the results can be declared by June. This could mean that the exams will be over in a period of a week or 10 days. Recently, the issue was discussed in a meeting chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan with officials of CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and NCERT on the issue of conducting board exams twice a year.
The Education Ministry has asked the board to make a draft of the plan to conduct exams twice a year public for feedback. It is learned that the suggestions will be considered before preparing the final schedule of the examination. According to the report, the central government first wants to start two board examinations for only class 10 students of CBSE schools. A government official said, ‘The decision on when to start it for class 12th students will be taken only on the basis of the experience of conducting exams twice for class 10th students.’
CBSE board exams usually start in February. The same timeframe will probably continue in the twice exam system as well. Sources said that conducting exams earlier would be challenging due to harsh winters in some areas and would potentially reduce teaching time.
One of the schedule options that CBSE is considering for conducting board exams twice a year is –
- The result of the first exam should be declared by March. Currently the result is released in May. That is, the results of the first board exam should be released two months earlier.
- The second exam should probably be conducted in early May and the results should be declared in June.
Earlier in January, Dharmendra Pradhan had said that the decision to conduct board exams twice a year would be implemented from the next academic year 2026-27. Pradhan had also said that preparations are underway to implement the semester system in class 11th and class 12th based on the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP).
The NCF brought to implement the National Education Policy 2020 recommended that students should be allowed to take board exams twice in an academic year, in which only the best marks will be kept.
Before implementing the plan, the country’s largest national board CBSE is trying to deal with the challenge of conducting both the exams, completing the evaluation of question papers and declaring the results before the next academic session begins.
