CBSE Open Book Exam: CBSE Board has proposed to conduct Open Book Exam as a pilot project, on which a trial is to be conducted. While on one hand the children are happy to open the book and take the exam, on the other hand experts say that this exam will be more challenging than the original exam.


New Delhi: CBSE Open Book Exam: Many major changes are taking place in the education sector in the country under the National Education Policy (NEP 20220). According to the recommendations of the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) to implement NEP, the concept of Open Book Examination (OBE) is being considered. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering open book examination for all students from class 9th to 12th as per the recommendations of the new National Curriculum Framework. At the end of the year, CBSE has proposed to conduct open book examinations in some schools for English, Mathematics and Science for class 9th and for English, Mathematics and Biology for classes 11th and 12th. So that the time taken can be evaluated and if this experiment is successful, it can be implemented in all future examinations. At present, the board has proposed to conduct open book examination in CBSE schools as a pilot project. As soon as the talk of open book exam comes, many questions arise in the minds of children, parents and teachers. NDTV has talked to educationist Anita Rampal about what are the advantages and disadvantages of open book exam , let us know-

Question- What are the advantages and disadvantages of open book exam?

Answer : There are benefits of this exam, but the board should not be pressurized to implement it immediately or within a year. There should be open book exams in schools so that we become accustomed to the way of studying, the way of teaching and the way of evaluation that will be done throughout the year. There will be no fixed questions in this examination and we do not have to give rote answers. Because open book examination is a method of learning, it is not just a method of assessment. Secondly, this examination should not be online. Because online has its own challenges, like Delhi University and other universities did during the Covid period. This examination cannot be conducted online properly. In online, the information is not clear as to who is giving the exam i.e. if someone else is not answering the questions instead of the student, in such a situation this exam should be offline. It should be offline. Such an experiment was conducted with the class 8th board of Madhya Pradesh. In the 70-80s, similar examinations were conducted in which students could take their books and notes. His preparation was such that evaluations were conducted the same throughout the year. In an open book exam, the student has to think of the answer to the question, and you use the book as a reference.

Question- If there will be permission to bring books in the open book examination, then how will the intellectual development of the students take place?

Answer- Intellectual development happens in such a way that you are not giving rote answers. You are not putting bookish knowledge on paper but the student’s own understanding is being assessed.

Question- Fear of examination encourages students to study, so what will happen if there is an open book?

Answer- Open book exam is not easy because you should think that you have not studied for a whole year and going for the exam, you start turning the pages of the book to see the answer to the question. Only those students will be able to answer in this examination who study well throughout the year. This exam is more challenging than the traditional exam.

Question- Children take cheats to cheat in exams, in such a situation it would be better to have the option of carrying an open book?

Answer- Children will be able to take the book in the examination, but the questions should not be such that their answers can be taken directly from the book. Those questions should challenge the student’s fundamental understanding. If the question is simple and the student opens the book and writes the answer, then there is no point in such an exam. Not only the exam but its marking should also be done differently.

Question- New education policy was implemented in Uttar Pradesh in 1992-93, self-book examination. That year, UP Board’s result was the worst because children had stopped studying because it is allowed to carry books in the examination.

Answer: It should be implicit in the teaching-learning process as to what the assessment will be like. How are you being assessed in the open book examination throughout the year, the questions are of completely different types, there is no written or rote information to be given from anywhere. Our entire system has to be changed, just by changing one exam the children will not get the correct marks. Therefore, such a process should be done two-three times in the beginning of the year in schools so that the students in the board can understand this method well.


Question- In the open book examination, when the child goes to take the examination with a book, then what will be the benefit of the child going to school. Examinations are meant to prepare children for future competitions, so in this way are we not making children dependent, are we not making children weak, because this has been happening till now and our system is also based on exams. Is based.

Answer : Absolutely not, this will not happen. In the present system, we are not making children understand. They write rote things in the exam and if they get marks in the exam then there is no point in learning like this. This is why it is said that the quality of our education is very low. Not only in schools but even in universities, children are not able to write down their thoughts, understanding and experiences because they are not in the habit of writing them down. In my opinion such education has no meaning.

Question- CBSE is implementing it from 9th class, but it should be implemented not only from 8th class but from primary level. Also, teachers should be given training for this examination method.

Answer- CBSE is currently conducting trials. He will do this as an experiment in some schools and see whether this is possible or not. Teachers should also be prepared for open book, they should also be trained.
