MUMBAI: Power utility firms, BEST, Tata Power, Adani Electricity and MSEDCL, are on high alert for Cyclone Nisarga hitting the western coast.

Sources in MSEDCL said the power utility firm prefers to go for a preventive ‘forced shutdown’ of transformers and feeders in the affected areas rather than face any devastation or electric fires. Another official said the the power transmission and distribution firms are in touch with the state disaster management teams.

As most of the power lines in Kalyan-Dombivli region are in the open, there is chance of supply being hit for an ‘indefinite period’. Supply was affected for over two hours in parts of Kalyan-Dombivli, Ambernath and Badlapur on Tuesday evening. Officials said it was due to a technical glitch at Barave switching station.

In the island city, the BEST has kept several generators on standby and has asked for additional manpower. Said a senior BEST official: “Our priority will be to restore all hospital supplies, specially power supplied to Covid centres and quarantine zones in a crisis situation…” Both Tata Power and Adani Electricity have kept their quick response teams on standby. A spokesperson from Adani Electricity said customers can call on the helpline ‘19122’ for any issues with power supply.
