Delhi Airport Security System: BCAS is in talks with airport operators to introduce the scanner. It was expected that the full body scanner and X-ray machine would likely be operational by May.

Full Body Scanner: ‘Full Body Scanner’ is expected to be installed at Delhi Airport by May 2024. Computer tomography X-ray can also be started by May next year. Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) DG Zulfikar Hasan said that due to some provisioning issues, the deadline for installing ‘full-body scanners’ and ‘CTX scanners’ at some airports is being extended. Both the equipment were to be commissioned by 31st December.

Expected to start at Delhi airport by May

In a press conference, Hasan said that there are some provision related issues. BCAS is discussing the introduction of the scanner with airport operators. He said, ‘We hope to install the full body scanner and X-ray machine by May…’ Hasan said that both are expected to be operational at the Delhi airport by May next year. BCAS had recommended last year to install a scanner equipped with computer tomography technology at the airport.

After the installation of CTX (Computer Tomography X-ray) scanner, passengers will not have to remove electronic devices from their luggage during security check at the airport. Currently, during security check at the airport, passengers have to take out electronic items and keep them in a separate ‘tray’. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that to improve the journey of passengers, improvements have also been made in the airport entrance, immigration desk and security.

What is ‘full body scanner’

This is such equipment, which is installed for safety purposes. It detects things hidden inside a person’s body. For this there is no need to remove even the clothes worn on the body. The X-ray-based scanner installed at Delhi Airport will help in security checks. Full body scanner is used for security check at airports, railway stations and other public places.
