Domestic and foreign products will be identified by a symbol

There will be no need to read the name of the producer country on the goods, the definition of indigenous will also be clear, BIS is considering

You will not need to read the name of the manufacturer’s country before purchasing any item. With a ‘symbol’ made on the goods you will understand that this product is made in India or it has been manufactured in another country. The Bureau of Indian Standards is considering a proposal for ‘Swadeshi’ standard amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal of ‘Vocal for Local’ and boycott of Chinese goods across the country following tensions at the border. BIS has also sought opinion from other departments concerned in this regard.

According to P. Rajesh, chairman of the Food and Agriculture Department of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the proposal is still in the initial stage. It is being considered. In fact, after tensions with China, the Ministry of Consumer has made it mandatory to write the names of the countries that make some items. So that people can easily choose to buy goods made in foreign countries or not. Once the ‘Swadeshi’ standard or trademark is prepared, consumers will have more flexibility in choosing this option.

Increased scope of indigenous standard

A senior BIS official said that the scope of the Swadeshi standard has expanded greatly. Therefore, a decision will be taken after discussing with all. Some more information has also been sought from Dr. Neelam Narayan of Ranchi (Jharkhand), who submitted the proposal of Swadeshi Standards. Dr. Neelam has said in her proposal that the use of indigenous trademarks should be optional. There should be no compulsion on companies. Along with this, he has also given some suggestions about deciding the definition of Swadeshi.

What will be the benefit of this step

If the consumer wants to buy indigenous goods, then there will be no need to read the name of the manufacturer and other information on the packing. The consumer will recognize that the goods are manufactured in the country only by looking at the indigenous mark or trademark on the product.

Preparation is also strictly on e-commerce companies

The new Consumer Protection Act is coming into existence from July 20. The new law will replace the Consumer Protection Act made in 1986. According to the new requirements, companies doing online, e-commerce and tele-marketing have also been included under the new law. The new law also earmarks accountability of companies doing business with e-commerce to sell their goods through them. However, the rules that have been made for this law coming into force from Monday have not been notified by the government yet. However, sources in the ministry claim that they will be notified this month.

Government in action after increasing tension with China

After rising tensions with China, the government has swung into action to promote indigenous products. As a result of this, a campaign has been started to use more and more of the indigenous goods in India and boycott of Chinese goods. Many business organizations, including the government, are constantly committed to how to stop China’s goods. In this direction, the campaign to identify indigenous and foreign products has started.
