E-passport: Big news! Now E-passport with embedded chip to be issued by government, know new rule

This year’s budget has been presented keeping in mind the Digital India Initiative. One of these is e-passport which will come with embedded chip and futuristic technologies.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the information related to e-passport today during the Union Budget 2022-2023.

Through e-passport, the central government wants to make immigration post easier globally. This idea will provide more security as the e-passport will be surrounded by biometric data.

e-passport details

  • As per the announcement, e-passports will be made available from next year. E-passports will be brought in line with international rules and guidelines. Presently, Indian citizens are given a booklet in the form of a passport.
  • E-passport will be brought with more security features and technology like radio-frequency identification and biometric etc. The Finance Minister also announced that the digital passport will be given an electronic chip which will be encoded with the security related data.
  • The passport holder’s information will be digitally stored and signed on the chip which will be embedded inside the passport booklet. If someone tampers with the chip, the passport will not be considered authentic. A digital signature will be given on the e-passport, which is different for every country.
  • The Government of India has so far issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports. The first e-passport in India was made for the former President of India Pratibha Patil.
  • This is the first time that the government has announced e-passport facility for common citizens. The mode of its application can also be like that of General Booklet Passport.
