Recently, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar also held a meeting with the officials of Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana in this regard.
Talking about Haryana, there are a total of 90 seats in the assembly here. Currently three seats are vacant. BJP has 41 MLAs. Congress has 29, JJP has 10 and INLD and HLP have one MLA each. There are five independent MLAs in the House.
There was a constant demand for elections in Kashmir
After the abolition of Article 370 in 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was made a Union Territory. Since then, the political parties there were constantly demanding the return of state status. It was being said repeatedly by the government that first elections will be held and only after that the state status will be restored.
If Election Commission sources are to be believed, voting can be conducted in three to four phases in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The voting process can be completed in September and the election results can be announced by the end of this month. According to highly placed sources of the Election Commission, the biggest challenge in the way of conducting elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is the security system. The sudden increase in terrorist incidents in recent times has increased the concern of the administration. Its effect can also be seen on the election program.
Election for the first time after delimitation
Assembly elections could not be held in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time due to the delimitation work not being completed. After the delimitation of May, 2022, the number of seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has now increased to 90. In this way, elections are to be held on 43 assembly seats in Jammu and 47 assembly seats in Kashmir. In 2014, elections were held on 87 assembly seats, including 37 seats in Jammu and 46 seats in Kashmir Valley, apart from 6 seats in Ladakh.
It is worth noting that in the Lok Sabha elections, there was a lot of enthusiasm about voting in Jammu and Kashmir. While voting in Srinagar had set a new record, there was a lot of enthusiasm about voting in other seats of the Union Territory as well.
