New Delhi. Now you will not have to wait long to get a new electricity connection in the country. The Electricity Ministry has reduced the number of days prescribed for providing connections. Now it will be available in three days in metropolitan areas, seven days in municipal areas and 15 days in rural areas. The rules have also been made easier for solar units installed on rooftops. For this, the government has approved amendments to the Electricity (Consumer Rights) Rules, 2020. The special thing is that now people who have Electric Vehicle (EV) will be able to get a separate electricity connection to charge it.
The Ministry of Power said that the period for getting a new electricity connection has been reduced from seven days to three days in metropolitan areas, from 15 days to seven days in other municipal corporation areas and from 30 days to 15 days in rural areas. But in rural areas of hilly areas, the time period for taking new connections or making amendments in existing connections will remain the same as before, 30 days.
More rights to consumers
Electricity consumers living in housing societies, multi-storey buildings, residential colonies will have the option to get a separate direct connection from the electricity distribution company for themselves or a single point connection for the entire society. Those taking direct connection from the distribution company will have separate billing. Similarly, there will be separate billing for backup power supply through the residential association and there will be separate billing for the common area as well.

If a consumer complains about the electricity bill, the electricity distribution company will have to install an additional meter within 5 days of receiving the complaint. Through this meter, the electricity consumption of consumers will be verified for the next 3 months. So that confidence can be created among consumers regarding electricity bills.
It will also take less time to install solar panels
The government has also reduced the verification time limit for installation of solar panels with capacity more than 10 kilowatts from 20 to 15 days. If the verification is not completed within 15 days, it will be assumed that the consumer has been approved.
