New Delhi : The Punjab Cabinet on Monday decided to reduce electricity tariffs by Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers. The decision, taken a few months before the state assembly elections, will cost Rs 3,318 crore annually. The decision will take effect immediately and will benefit about 600,000 users. There are about 4.2 million domestic consumers in the state. The announcement was made by Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi after a cabinet meeting. “We are reducing the price of electricity by Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers,” Channie told reporters.
The burden on government cells will increase
Chief Minister Chananj (Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi) said the decision would be implemented immediately. Each year, an additional burden of Rs 3,318 crore will be borne by the government. “People want cheap electricity,” he said, according to a survey by his government. He claims that with this decision, electricity prices for the private sector have become the cheapest in the country in Punjab.
“People in Punjab don’t want anything for free,” he said. They want quality electricity at affordable prices . “The cost of electricity per 100 units (up to 2 kilowatts) has been reduced from Rs 6.18 per unit to Rs 1.17 per unit, and the cost of electricity for 101-300 units is Rs 9.01 per unit and more than 300 units per unit,” Channi said. It will be Rs 5.8. Electricity rates of more than 2 kilowatts and up to seven kilowatts will also be reduced.
Channie targeted the opposition
Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, Charanjit Singh Channi said Delhi’s electricity subsidy was Rs 2,220 crore a year, while in Punjab it was Rs 18,000 crore. He said his government was buying electricity at low prices and the benefits would be given to consumers. He said his government had issued a notice to terminate the power purchase contract with GVK Goindwal Sahib Electricity Project as it costs Rs 7-8 per unit. He targeted the state’s Shiromani Akali Dal and the former BJP government, alleging that no tender had been issued for the project.
