Electricity Subsidy: Big news! Now Consumers will be able to choose whether to take electricity subsidy or not, know details

You will be able to choose whether or not to take electricity subsidy through both online and offline means. Kejriwal had said that the decision to allow financially capable consumers to be excluded from the subsidy scheme was taken by the government after getting suggestions from the people.

New Delhi: Consumers of Delhi will be able to choose whether or not to take the electricity subsidy given by the Delhi government on monthly consumption of up to 400 units of electricity, both online and offline. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced last week that electricity subsidy would be given to consumers only when they asked for it.

What did kejriwal say
Kejriwal had said that the decision to allow financially sound consumers out of the subsidy scheme was taken by the government after receiving suggestions from people so that the savings made could be spent on building schools and hospitals. The modalities for registering consumers for the subsidy are likely to be finalized by the end of the month.

Discom portal to register
Officials said on Wednesday that the department is also consulting power distribution companies to streamline the registration process. An official of the power department said that since more than 80 per cent consumers pay their electricity bills online, discoms portals and apps will be common platforms to register to opt for or opt out of the subsidy scheme.

Subsidy option will have to be selected from October 1
The official said those who are not using the online mode will be free to choose the subsidy option by filling up the form and submitting it to the discom offices. Consumers will have to choose the subsidy option from October 1. There are 58.18 lakh electricity consumers in the national capital, out of which 47.11 lakh are benefitted from the subsidy scheme. 100% subsidy is given to domestic consumers using up to 200 units in a month. Consumers whose monthly consumption is 201-400 units, they get subsidy up to Rs.800.
