L&T One day Menstrual Leave: During the Women’s Day celebration, L&T has announced to give menstrual leave to its female employees.
Employees Leave: Inspired by a special arrangement of Bihar and Odisha government for women, for the first time in the country, a private company has announced to give women one day leave in a month during menstruation. In fact, the chairman of L&T, a leading company in the engineering and construction sector, SN Subrahmanyan, has for the first time started the facility of giving ‘menstrual leave’ to the female employees of the company for one day every month. The company made this announcement during the Women’s Day celebration at the Powai office in Mumbai. Here Chairman Subrahmanyan was addressing 350 female employees.
L&T has 60,000 employees, of which 5,000 are women employees, which is 9 percent of the total workforce. However, this leave policy does not include L&T’s non-construction and non-engineering businesses such as financial and technology services. This is because these businesses have the facility of working from home, while the main L&T operations have a work from office policy.
L&T chairman has been on the mark
Let us tell you that a few months ago, the chairman of L&T came under fire by advising employees to work for 90 hours. But now, by making provision for menstrual leave, the company has taken a better step in the private sector.
At that time, a controversy had erupted over Subramanian’s statement in which he had said, “What is the benefit to the employees by taking leave, what do you do sitting at home? How long can you gaze at your wife? How long can wives gaze at their husbands? Go to the office and start working.”
There is no regulation on menstrual leave in India but several organisations such as AU Small Finance Bank, Orient Electric, Swiggy and Zomato, and states such as Odisha, Bihar and Kerala have independently adopted such a policy for the welfare of women.
