EPFO pensioners and subscribers are of the opinion that the verdict of the apex court, according to the salary, will end their long wait for pension.

After 21 months, the Supreme Court of India will hear a review petition of the EPFO on an appeal filed by the Ministry of Labor and Employment against the decision of the Supreme Court. The three-judge bench headed by Justice U Lalit will consider the petitions on Monday, 18 January. Earlier, the Kerala High Court and the Supreme Court have ruled in favor of EPFO pensioners.
The decision of the Kerala High Court was upheld
On 1 April 2019, the Supreme Court upheld the Kerala High Court’s decision on the monthly pension of the Employees Pension Scheme (EPS). The Labor Ministry then filed an appeal against the decision of the High Court despite a review petition filed by the EPFO. On 12 July 2019, a bench headed by the then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi ordered a hearing on both the petitions. However, no further action was taken in this regard. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee sought clarification in the matter in October 2019.

According to the news, if the Supreme Court moves its verdict, the EPFO structure could undergo a drastic change as the Supreme Court review is regarding the PF account of EPFO customers. In this regard, senior officials of the Ministry of Labor have given some suggestions in this regard to the Cabinet Committee. These officials were of the view that to continue the EPFO and make the fund more relevant, structural changes need to be made.

Let me tell you, there are more than 23 lakh pensioners in EPFO, who get pension of Rs 1,000 every month. While his contribution to PF is less than a quarter of it. Officials said that if this continues, the management will face difficulties in the future. This is why initiative should be taken to make it more relevant.
