EPFO: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has exempted certain categories of employees from the requirement to link Aadhaar with their Universal Account Number (UAN). This exemption was announced in a circular dated 29 November 2024. The government has asked employees to activate UAN and link it with Aadhaar. However, some employees have been exempted from this.
Employees of these categories will get exemption
International employees who have completed their assignment in India but have not taken Aadhaar. They do not need to link UAN with Aadhaar.
Indian employees permanently settled abroad who have acquired foreign citizenship and have not taken Aadhaar.
Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan who work in Indian institutions under the EPF&MP Act but live outside India and do not have Aadhaar.
In these cases, the identity of the employees will be verified on the basis of passport, citizenship certificate or other documents. Also, PAN, bank account and other information will be verified.
Claim process
- Officials will be extra cautious in these cases and will enter all the information and take approval from the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
- In cases of balance of more than Rs 5 lakh, the employer may be asked to verify the authenticity of the member.
- Payment will be made only through NEFT. It has also been told in the circular that making UAN will remain mandatory, but the requirement of Aadhaar linking has been exempted in this situation, because it is not possible for these employees to get Aadhaar.
