EPFO Verification New Rules: According to the report, the exclusion of Aadhaar as a valid document for date of birth verification is the result of a directive issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). In a circular issued on December 22, 2023, UIDAI emphasized that Aadhaar remains a reliable proof of identity and address, but it should not be used as proof of date of birth.
EPFO Verification New Rules: EPFO has recently changed its document verification process to correct or update the date of birth (DoB). The organization working under the Ministry of Labor and Employment issued an announcement on January 16 stating that Aadhaar has been removed from the list of acceptable documents for proof of date of birth.
According to the report, the exclusion of Aadhaar as a valid document to confirm date of birth is the result of a directive issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). In a circular issued on December 22, 2023, UIDAI emphasized that Aadhaar remains a reliable proof of identity and address, but it should not be used as proof of date of birth.
To update the date of birth in the EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) account, individuals are now required to submit optional documents, as stated in the August 2023 circular.
What are the acceptable documents now?
- Birth certificate issued by the registrar
- Marksheet issued by government board or university
- School Leaving Certificate (SLC)/Transfer Certificate (TC)/SSC Certificate
- Certificate based on service record of Central/State Government organizations
- Medical certificate issued by Civil Surgeon, Affidavit by Competent Court
- Passport
- PAN card
- Central/State Pension Payment Order.
- CGHS/Medi-claim card issued by Government/PSUs bearing photograph and date of birth.
- Domicile Certificate
UIDAI clarified
UIDAI’s position on Aadhaar for proof of date of birth is clear. Although Aadhaar is recognized as a valid proof of identity and address, it cannot be used as proof of date of birth. The uniqueness of Aadhaar lies in its 12-digit identification number, which is issued by UIDAI on behalf of the Government of India.
To further clarify the matter, an office memorandum dated December 20, 2018, issued by MeitY through UIDAI clearly states that the Aadhaar number establishes identity subject to authentication, but it cannot be used as proof of date of birth. Should not be considered.
