EPFO Update: In the circular, EPFO said that Aadhaar card, which was being considered as date of birth proof by many beneficiaries, is now primarily an identity verification tool and not a birth proof.
New Delhi: By regulating the retirement fund, Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has taken a big decision for crores of its subscribers. Under this, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has excluded Aadhaar Card from the document list of Date of Birth Proof .
EPFO has said that now ‘ Aadhaar’ will not be considered a valid document as proof of date of birth (DoB). EPFO has also issued a circular regarding this.
EPFO issued a circular saying, the decision to remove ‘Aadhaar’ from the list of valid documents has been taken after the instructions of the Unique Identification Authority of India i.e. UIDAI.
According to this circular, Aadhaar is also being removed from the list of acceptable documents for updating date of birth during EPFO related work. Along with this, EPFO said in the circular that Aadhaar card, which was being considered as date of birth proof by many beneficiaries, is now primarily an identity verification tool and not a birth proof.

- Marksheet issued by a recognized government board or university
- School Living Certificate or SLC/School Transfer Certificate i.e. TC/SSC certificate containing name and date of birth
- Service Record Based Certificate
- PAN card
- Central/State Pension Payment Order
- Domicile certificate issued by the government
- Passport
- Government pension
- Medical certificate issued by Civil Surgeon
Aadhaar is not a valid proof of date of birth – UIDAI
Earlier, UIDAI had said in a circular on December 22, 2023 that the Aadhaar number can be used to identify an individual after verification. Because of this it is not proof of date of birth. UIDAI had also said that many bodies like EPFO are using Aadhaar to verify the date of birth. Referring to the orders of several High Courts, it was said that Aadhaar is not a valid proof of date of birth.
