The Uttarakhand government has now decided to generate electricity from the waste coming out in the municipal corporation and municipality area. Soon there will be a meeting under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister on this matter. The state government is going to take this step to overcome the ever increasing problem of waste in the state. According to the Urban Development Department, about 80 percent of the bodies are also being included in the Waste to Energy. Use of a private plant in Roorkee is in front of the state government. In view of this plant, the government has also formulated a policy related to electricity generation.
The government estimates that the bodies will also get income from West to Energy and the landfill problem will also be resolved to a great extent. The reason is that most corporations and municipalities are also facing the problem of land scarcity in depositing solid waste at one place.
In the process of electricity generation, the amount of solid waste is greatly reduced and due to this, the problem of landfill can be overcome. Details of bodies have also been sought for how much waste and how much electricity can be made.
Environment is the biggest challenge
. Environment in West to Energy is also a challenge and due to this many power plants of the country were also closed. The government says that the solution of this problem is possible in the form of technology and this aspect is also being taken into consideration.
This is the situation
– 900 tons of garbage is generated in the bodies of the state every day. About 50 percent of this is organic waste. 17 percent is waste that can be recycled. 11 percent is biomedical waste and 21 percent is inert (sand, concrete etc.) waste.
– 40 percent of the garbage is here, which is not taken up. This waste is dumped on roads, ravines and other places.
– Up to 5 MW of electricity can be generated from this waste, according to the assessment of the State Pollution Control and Environmental Protection Board.
– 24 MW biomass power generation capacity in the state. This biomass is generated from industrial and agricultural wastes. This is about 50 percent of the total waste. Electricity is being considered in the mountains using this waste.
How electricity is made
In this, garbage is burnt through the incinerator and the heat generated from it is generated by running the turbine. Electricity can also be generated by bringing methane gas from a landfill and burning it.
What will the government have to do
For waste to energy, the government will have to collect waste, sort it and arrange to bring this waste to the plant. It is easy to arrange this in the plains, and this is the reason why the government wants to start this work in the plains districts first. According to the state environment report, there is a shortage of power of about 221 million units in the state. One ton of waste can generate up to 600 kW.
It has been decided to implement Waste to Energy in the state. Soon there will be a meeting under the chairmanship of CM. On one hand it will get rid of the problem of waste and on the other hand the lack of electricity will also be overcome. A decision will also be taken soon on the Roorkee plant. Earlier we did not have policy, now policy has been made.
