At least 68 people have been killed when a Yeti Airlines 9N-ANC ATR-72 plane crashed on the banks of the Seti River in the resort city of Pokhara in central Nepal. There were 72 people on board this plane, including five Indian citizens. There were four crew members in the aircraft.
At least 32 bodies have been recovered from the debris site. According to officials, the rescue and search operation was stopped on Sunday and will now be started on Monday. According to the airlines, only emergency and rescue flights will operate on Monday. Yeti Airlines tweeted, “We would like to inform you that all regular Yeti Airlines flights scheduled for January 16, 2023 have been canceled as a condolence to the loss of lives in the Yeti Airlines 9N-ANC ATR-72 500 crash.” However, emergency and rescue flights will resume.
First accident related to ATR-72 aircraft
68 people died in a plane crash in Nepal on Sunday. This was the first accident related to ATR-72 aircraft in the country. There were 72 people on board the plane including four crew members. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said that Yeti Airline’s 9N-ANC ATR-72 aircraft had taken off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu at 10.33 am. While landing at Pokhara airport, the plane crashed on the banks of Seti river between the old airport and the new airport.
The ATR-72 is a twin-engine turboprop regional airliner developed by aircraft manufacturer ATR in France and Italy. ATR is a joint venture between French aerospace company Aerospatiale and Italian aviation group Aeritalia. Currently, only Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines operate ATR-72 aircraft in Nepal. According to My Republica newspaper, Jagannath Niraula, spokesperson of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, said that this is the first accident related to ATR-72 aircraft in Nepal.
Sunday’s crash was the third worst in Nepal’s history, according to data from the Aviation Safety Network. Yeti Airlines spokesperson Sudarshan Bartaula said that there is no information about any survivors so far. Nepal has a very bad record of plane accidents due to the sudden change of weather and airstrips built in inaccessible places.
All five Indians were from Uttar Pradesh
Among those killed in the plane crash in Nepal, four were residents of Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh. District Magistrate Aryka Akhori said on Sunday, ‘Sonu Jaiswal, Anil Rajbhar, Abhishek Kushwaha and Vishal Sharma, residents of Ghazipur, are also involved in the plane crash in Nepal. They were residents of different villages of Kasimabad tehsil. He told, ‘The families of the deceased are being contacted. Our Deputy Collector and other officers are meeting him. Akhori told, ‘We are also in touch with the embassy. Rescue work is going on in Nepal. Currently it has stopped due to night but it will start again tomorrow. After receiving the dead body, we will take necessary action.
When asked about the fifth Indian citizen, Sanjay Jaiswal, who died in the accident, he said, “It may be that he is ancestrally connected to Ghazipur, but no concrete information has been received about it yet.” According to the information received, he was living in Kathmandu. Significantly, this is one of the worst accidents in Nepal in the last 30 years. This passenger plane crashed into a river valley on Sunday while landing at Pokhara airport, killing at least 68 people. There were 72 people including five Indian nationals on board the plane.
