What is in the new hand bag policy?
A big change has been made in the rules for carrying luggage in the flight. According to the new rules, now passengers will be allowed to carry only one hand bag or cabin bag inside the flight. This rule will apply to both domestic and international flights. Any bag other than one bag must be checked in.
Air India’s rules for hand bags
Air India passengers can carry hand bags weighing up to 7 kg in premium economy and economy class. Its dimension should not exceed 115 cm (length + width + height). At the same time, passengers in first class and business class can carry bags weighing up to 10 kg. Apart from cabin baggage, each passenger can also carry a laptop bag or ladies purse. Provided it can fit under the seat and its weight does not exceed 3 kg.
Air India’s guidelines for hand bags
- According to Indian security rules, each passenger can carry only one hand baggage.
- If the weight or size of the baggage exceeds the prescribed limit, an additional fee will be charged.
- The old rules will apply for tickets issued before May 2, 2024.
- An additional seat can be booked for special baggage (such as musical equipment).
- However, its weight should not exceed 75 kg and it should be securely tied to the seat.
IndiGo’s hand bag rules
Each passenger is allowed to carry a handbag weighing a maximum of 7 kg and up to 115 cm (length + width + height). Passengers can carry a ladies purse or laptop bag. But, its weight should not exceed 3 kg. This means that a female passenger cannot carry a laptop bag along with a ladies purse. If a passenger carries luggage heavier than the prescribed weight, then an additional fee may be charged from him.
IndiGo’s check-in baggage rules
- On domestic flights, a passenger can carry up to 15 kg of check-in baggage.
- Additional 10 kg baggage facility is available in double or multi-seat booking.
- Check-in baggage for international flights varies depending on the destination.
- It is usually fixed at 20 kg to 30 kg per passenger.
Why were the rules changed?
BCAS has changed the rules related to hand bags due to the increasing number of passengers. In fact, the number of air passengers has been increasing continuously for some time. In November 2024, the number of people traveling by flight broke all previous records. This is also increasing the burden on the airport. The new rules will also reduce the time taken for security checks.
What was the weight limit earlier?
Before the rule was changed, the limit for carrying hand bags on flights was higher. It ranged from a minimum of 8 kg to a maximum of 12 kg. However, after the change in rules, this limit has come down to a minimum of 7 to a maximum of 10 kg. Earlier the limit was 8 kg in economy, 10 kg in premium economy and 12 kg in first / business class.
Keep these things in mind while traveling
- A passenger will now be able to carry only one hand bag. This rule will be for both domestic and international flights.
- If you carry more than one bag, you will have to get the additional bag checked.
- Economy and premium economy passengers will be able to carry a handbag weighing up to 7 kg.
- The weight limit for first class and business class passengers has been fixed at 10 kg.
- If the flight is booked before May 2, 2024, economy class passengers can carry a hand bag up to 8 kg.
- Premium economy passengers can carry a hand bag weighing 10 kg and first class – business class passengers can carry a hand bag weighing 12 kg.
