Rudraprayag, Brijesh Bhatt. Kedarnath Dham  Garudchatti, who was involved in the important footsteps of the Kedarnath Yatra before the disaster of 2013, has been restored after six years of isolation. In order of the construction work done under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Dream Project, Garuda Chatti has been re-connected to Kedarnath Dham by constructing a three and a half km new walking route. Garudchatti used to be an important chatti before the disaster.

Nature’s games are truly unique, but they can be understood only by understanding them properly. In the year 1985-86, Narendra Modi, like an ordinary seeker, was employed in the Kedarnath region. The people used to do penance and meditation in a sadhana place in Garudchatti on the mountain located three and a half kilometers from Kedarnath. They used to walk from Garuda Chatti to Kedarnath every day to perform a water sacrifice to Lord Kedarnath. There was a pedestrian path between the two places. The same path was completely hit by a landslide in the horrific disaster that occurred on 16–17 June 2013. The foot bridge connecting Kedarpuri to Garudchatti on the Mandakini river also got flooded. After this, Garuda Chatti became completely isolated and deserted.

The very next year, in 2014, Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of the country and it became his priority to eradicate the wounds inflicted by the disaster on the pilgrimage area. Reconstruction of this walkway was also important in the construction work done in this area under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Dream Project. After being a part of the project, Garudchatti has been prepared by connecting three and a half km of new walking route to Kedarnath Dham. Three meditation caves have also been constructed on the hill of Kedarnath under the Dream Project. Rudra Dhyan cave is prominent among them.

Located 1.5 km from Kedarnath Dham and at an altitude of 11 thousand 752 feet above sea level, Rudra cave is five meters long and three meters wide. Along with electric-water inside the cave, bathrooms and heaters have also been arranged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi meditated 17 hours in this cave on 18 May 2019. Since then, these caves have become the center of attraction of people in the country and the world. The Garhwal Mandal Development Corporation (GMVN) is responsible for their operations. The cave has all the necessary facilities for meditation and yoga as well as telephone.

Mahesh Bagwadi, president of the Kedarnath trade association, says that the purpose of the construction of the Dhyan Cave has been done. That is proving worthwhile, because many devotees of Baba Kedar want to do spiritual practice here. This is the most suitable place for them.

Before the Kedarnath footpath, the Garuda Chatti was a significant chatti (halt) before the disaster. Here the saints and travelers used to stay in large numbers and rested the night. The Prime Minister, who reached the foundation stone of reconstruction works in Kedarnath in October 2017, expressed his desire to re-populate this Chatti too. Immediately a plan was made to populate Chatti. Now a new foot route from Kedarnath to Garudchatti is ready, which is three meters wide.

Assistant Engineer NS Navani of the District Disaster Management Authority Rudraprayag said that it cost about 17 crore rupees to prepare the route. The temporary bridge over the Mandakini river in Kedarnath is currently underway and construction of a paved bridge is underway. Passenger facilities are also being raised in Garudchatti.

Legendary chatti has been the center of spiritual practice

Veteran Tirtha Purohit Srinivas Posti says that Garudchatti is related to Lord Vishnu. According to mythological belief, Lord Vishnu came to Kedarnath riding his vehicle in Garuda. During this time he stayed in this chatti and rested here for some time. Since then, this chatti has been named Garuda Chatti. The idol of Lord Garuda is also installed here. Before the disaster many saints and saints used to practice here all year. Even in ten to twelve feet of snow, they lived here.
