Gold Hallmarking: From today, April 1, 2023, hallmarking has been made mandatory in gold jewellery. Now to save any gold jewellery, it is necessary to have a 6 digit Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID) on it.

However, yesterday the government has given relief to those jewelers who had given information about their stock earlier and they can sell their jewelery stock for the next three months. Know what is the complete news and to whom the government has announced big relief.

BIS gave information in March

While giving information in March, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) had said that in the new financial year, no shopkeeper would be able to sell gold jewelery without the 6 digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID).

These jewelers got 3 more months

A day before the implementation of the six-digit ‘alphanumeric HUID’ (Hallmark Unique Identification) system for gold jewellery, the government gave a big relief to jewelers. The government on Friday allowed around 16,000 jewelers to sell old hallmarked jewelery of ‘declared’ gold till June. In this way, he has got three more months. However, this exemption will be applicable only on jewelery made before July 2021. In this regard, after a recent meeting with the bodies of the jewelery industry, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has issued a notification.

What is there in the notification of the government

According to the notification, the ministry has amended the Hallmarking of Gold Jewelery and Gold Artifacts Order, 2020. Under this, the jewelers who had earlier declared their stock of old hallmarked jewelery have been given time till June 30, 2023 to sell them.

Nidhi Khare, additional secretary in the ministry, said that there are 1.56 lakh registered jewelers in the country, out of which 16,243 jewelers had disclosed their old hallmarked jewelery on July 1 this year. He has been given an additional time of three months. He said that this is the last deadline and no more time will be given to clear the old stock.

Significantly, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made six-digit ‘alphanumeric’ HUID mandatory for hallmarked gold jewelery from April 1.
