In the month of July, a total of 13.21 lakh new members have joined the Social Security Scheme of Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). A month ago i.e. in June, 10.58 lakh members were added. In this sense, the number of new members has increased by 3.21 lakh. These figures broadly describe the employment situation in the organized sector of the country.
Status of April and May: According to the data, 10.72 lakh new members joined the ESIC scheme in April and 8.87 lakh new members in May. This was the time when the country was in the grip of the second wave of Corona and restrictions like lockdown were imposed in most of the states. Since the relaxation of the restrictions imposed at the state level to prevent the second wave of corona, the number of members joining the schemes has increased i.e. new people are getting employment on regular salary.
According to official data, the total number of new subscribers joining the schemes of ESIC in 2020-21 stood at 1.15 crore, which was 1.51 crore in 2019-20 and 1.49 crore in 2018-19. About 83.35 lakh new subscribers were added to the ESIC scheme during September 2017 to March 2018. According to the report, the number of members joining ESIC during September 2017 to July 2021 stood at 5.42 crore.
What EPFO data say: According to official figures, 14.65 lakh new subscribers were added to EPFO in July. This is up from 11.16 lakh as of June 2021. It said that during September 2017 to February 2021, about 4.51 crore new subscribers joined the EPFO scheme. Let us tell you that NSO has been releasing this type of data since April 2018.
