The Punjab government on Thursday announced a minimum hike of 15 per cent in the basic pay of its employees and reinstatement of some allowances. This initiative of the state government will put a burden of Rs 42,673 crore on its exchequer.
According to a government statement, “With this the total average increase in salary/pension per employee of the state will be up to Rs 1.05 lakh per annum.” Now they will get more amount than they were getting every year. This has benefited the employees of Rs 4,700 crore.
The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. This will increase the salary of the employees over and above the basic pay of December 31, 2015. He directed all the Ministers, Administrative Secretaries and Heads of Departments to talk to their respective employees and resolve their grievances at the earliest.
Employees of many departments are agitating against the state government over some recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. He said, “After today’s announcements, all the legitimate demands of the employees should be resolved.”
The Chief Minister appreciated Cabinet Minister Brahm Mahindra and others for resolving the grievances of 2.85 lakh employees and 3.07 lakh pensioners in this matter. The latest wage hike will increase the total annual burden of salary and pension hikes by Rs 42,673 crore on the state exchequer.
Let us tell you that following the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission, the Punjab Government had given the green signal for the increase in the pay scale. It was decided to implement it from 1 July 2021. The government had also accepted most of the recommendations of the commission.
HS Tiwari, General Secretary, All India Accounts and Audit Committee, said that the government revises the pay scales of the employees from time to time. Sixth pay scale is applicable in Punjab. However, after this increase, his salary will come equal to the salary of central employees.
