Online frauds have increased a lot these days. This can be from a call on your phone or it is also possible from a link in the message. You must read this case and understand how to avoid it.
When Atul realized that a fraud of Rs 23,455 had happened with him, his senses were blown away. His savings of three months were blown away in three minutes and that too in front of his eyes. Atul is worried what to do now, where to complain and how to get his money back?
On August 17, Atul, as usual, took a bath in the morning and went out on the job of delivery. On August 17, he did not have many orders for delivery. He was sitting empty playing games on his phone. Then he got a call. The caller gave his name as Mayank and introduced himself as Google Pay’s customer care. This is where the cheating game started.
The conversation between Atul and Mayank went like this-
Mayank: Good morning sir. I am speaking to customer care of google pay and my name is mayank.
Atul: Yes, tell me.
Mayank: Sir, your refund has arrived, but you haven’t. I want to know why you are not taking him out.
Atul: Refund?
Mayank: Yes sir, you don’t know what?
Atul: No, I don’t know.
Mayank: Sir, you have got a special cashback of Rs 2753 from Google Pay for the transactions done with your number in the last days… If you do not know about this then I can help you.
Atul: Good sir. How can I remove, please tell.
Mayank: Alright sir, I will do my best to help you. You open Google Pay on your phone.
Atul: OK, it’s opened.
Mayank: Now there is an option of New Payment at the bottom, click on it.
Atul: OK, done.
Mayank: Now there are four options in front of you, out of which the first option is Bank Transfer, you have to click on it.
Atul: But I don’t want to transfer money? Why are you doing this?
Mayank: Sir, your cashback which is stuck, that money will be transferred to your account. So click on Transfer.
Atul: Okay.
Mayank: Now here you will see the account number. So here you do not have to enter the account number. Here you have to enter the Transaction ID of Google Pay. ID is – XXXXXXXXXXX
Atul: Okay. has entered.
Mayank: Enter the same ID below once again and then enter XXXXXXXX number in IFSC.
Atul: Ok sir, put it.
Mayank: Now below is the Recipient Name, write REFUND in it. And write it in capital letters. If you write it in small, then your cashback may get stuck again.
Atul: It has been written.
Mayank: Now Continue is written below, touch on it.
Atul: OK.
Mayank: Now you have to enter the last five numbers of your mobile, so that your registered mobile number can be verified in our system. Below it is written What’s this for?. In that you have to enter your cashback amount, which is 2753.
Atul: Okay. I have entered the last five numbers of my phone above and the amount of cashback below.
Mayank: Now you will see “Proceed to pay” at the bottom. Click on it.
Atul: But sir, in this way money is sent to someone. By doing this my money will be deducted.
Mayank: No sir, not a single penny will be deducted from you. I am calling from google pay and this call is being recorded. You tap on “Proceed to pay” once. Then you will be all clear.
Atul: Okay. done. Now it is written that “You are sending 23,455 Rs to REFUND”.
Mayank: Yes sir, now you click on “Send Money”.
Atul: Okay. done.
Mayank: Now here you have to verify your UPI PIN, so that your information matches with our system. By doing this your account will be verified and this transaction will fail automatically. As soon as your account is verified, your stuck cashback will be added to your account immediately. This is a complete process. And yes, I am on the line. Check your balance once and get me confirmed.
Atul had faith in Mayank by now. Hesitantly, he entered his UPI PIN and clicked on OK. On the other hand, the money reached to the caller Mayank. Mayank disconnected the phone as soon as he got the money. Then when Atul tried to call on the same phone number, he would get the same answer again and again – “The number you have called is currently out of network coverage area.”
Then Atul understood that he had been made a goat and 23 thousand 455 rupees had flown from his account.
Then Atul got another call. He asked- son, it is time for lunch. Why haven’t you come home yet? I have made your favorite vegetable.
This phone belonged to Atul’s mother.
