Now the government will deposit FD of Rs 10,800 for new born children. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced a new scheme under which the government will deposit an FD of Rs 10,800 in the name of a newborn baby. FD means fixed deposit. It is a type of investment offered by banks and non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) that allows you to invest a lump sum of money for a fixed period at a pre-determined interest rate.
You can withdraw money when the child turns 18
Speaking at the ‘Jan Bharosa Sammelan’ in Soreng district, Tamang announced the ‘Sikkim Shishu Samriddhi Yojana’ ahead of the assembly elections in the state. He said that the FD will mature when the child turns 18 years old. Then you can withdraw the money.
Government is taking steps to increase population in the state
According to the 2011 census, the Himalayan state has the lowest population in the country at 6.10 lakh. Tamang’s government is taking several steps to encourage couples to have more children to address concerns about the growing population. These include additional salary hike for government employees with two or three children, one year’s maternity leave for female government employees and grants for non-working mothers, etc.
25,000 employees will be regular
Tamang had last year said that the low fertility rate among the local indigenous population in Sikkim was a matter of grave concern. We must do everything we can to reverse this process. At the event in Soreng, the CM said that around 25,000 temporary government employees who have completed four years in service will receive memorandum for regularizing them in Rangpo on February 29. Earlier this month, the state cabinet had approved the decision to regularize the government employees. And the restoration of the old pension scheme was approved. The CM also announced that Rs 48 lakh will be spent on the construction of homestays, which will generate employment opportunities and promote tourism in the state.
