In fact, up to 25 percent rebate in road tax will be given under the National Vehicle Scrapping Policy in the purchase of new vehicles if old vehicles are discarded. This announcement was made by the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways by issuing a release.

Decision taken to reduce environmental pollution

The ministry said in a release that under the vehicle scrap policy, people would be encouraged to discard old and environment-polluting vehicles. For this, on depositing the vehicle in the junk, a certificate will be given to its owner, on the basis of which this exemption will be given. This discount will be 25 percent on private vehicles and up to 15 percent on commercial vehicles. Along with this, this exemption will be available for 8 years in case of commercial vehicles and 15 years in case of private vehicles.

New rules will start from these dates

Under this policy, the rules related to fitness test and scraping center have come into force from 1 October 2021. The rules for scrapping 15-year-old vehicles belonging to government and PSUs will be applicable from April 1, 2022. Apart from this, for commercial vehicles, these rules will be applicable from April 1, 2023, for all other vehicles, the rules related to fitness testing will be implemented in a phased manner from June 1, 2024.




Online portal will work

This entire scheme will be linked to an online portal. The rule of linking to the vehicle portal has been kept so that old vehicles can be easily de-registered and new certificates can be obtained on the same basis.
