According to USCIS data, Indian-origin tech companies secured a fifth of all H-1B visas issued by the US in 2024. What does ‘approved beneficiary’ mean for H-1B visa?
On the USCIS portal, ‘Approved Beneficiaries’ counts the number of specific individuals (not petitions) who have been approved to work in the US under the H-1B programme through an employer’s petition. The approval can be for ‘initial employment’ (new H-1B employees entering the programme) or ‘continued employment’ (extension or modification for existing H-1B employees).
However, the data does not indicate whether the beneficiaries actually started work or not. It also does not include multiple petitions filed for the same beneficiary by different employers.
What did the Pew Research Centre report say?
The Pew Research Centre, in its report ‘What we know about the US H-1B visa programme’ (published on March 4, 2025), said that of the H-1B workers whose applications were approved in FY 2023, 73 per cent were born in India. Pew obtained this information through a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request to USCIS, receiving data through Sept. 20, 2024, including admissions by country of birth from FY 2000 through FY 2023.
