Hemant Soren remains acting CM of Jharkhand even after arrest, Governor did not administer oath to Champai Soren

Hemant Soren was arrested by ED on Wednesday night. Before his arrest, Hemant Soren had gone to Raj Bhavan and resigned from the post of Chief Minister. Despite this, he still remains the acting CM of the state.


Ranchi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who was ignoring several ED summons, was arrested on Wednesday. ED has arrested him in a land scam. He will be produced in the local court today i.e. on Thursday, where the ED will demand 14 days’ remand. Before being arrested, Soren had gone to Raj Bhavan and resigned from the post of Chief Minister, which was accepted by the Governor.

However, even after resigning, Hemant Soren remains the acting Chief Minister of Jharkhand. According to law, the post of Chief Minister of any state cannot remain vacant. After resignation, the Governor keeps the CM as acting CM. Whereas when the next CM is sworn in, the previous CM will remain the acting CM.

Champai Soren was elected leader of the legislature party

This entire sequence has happened in Jharkhand. Hemat Soren has resigned. Champai Soren has been elected the leader of the legislature party. Champai Soren will now be the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand. But the Governor has not administered the oath to him yet. JMM MLAs kept creating ruckus in Raj Bhavan on Wednesday night to get him sworn in immediately. But the Governor did not take any decision.

14 people arrested so far in the case

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren faces charges of money laundering and alleged illegal possession of some immovable properties besides his alleged links with the land mafia. According to the central agency ED, this investigation is linked to a big racket of illegal change of land ownership by mafias in Jharkhand. The ED has so far arrested 14 people in the case, including 2011 batch IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, who served as director of the state social welfare department and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.
