How to Check Gold Purity : Investing in gold has been a very famous option for people in India for centuries. Gold is considered a symbol of wealth, prosperity and good fortune. In Indian culture, it is also given as a gift on wedding or special occasions. Investing in physical gold by buying gold jewellery, coins and bars is always a good option. All people and investors should buy gold from banks, jewelery shops and authorized dealers only. However, investors should be wary of fake or low quality jewelry or bars before buying.
On the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, people from all over the country will come out of their homes to buy gold and jewellery. Before buying gold, its purity can be checked in some ways. The purity of gold is measured in carats, which is denoted by kt or k. 24 karat gold is the purest and contains 99.9 percent gold, but it is quite soft and hence other metals are mixed to make jewelry. 18k gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, which means the jewelery will contain 75 percent pure gold.
These are easy home methods to check the purity of gold
1. Test with vinegar
You can test vinegar on gold. Simply put a few drops of vinegar on a piece of gold and wait. If the color changes then the gold is impure and if it remains the same then it is pure gold.
2. Test with a magnet
The easiest and cheapest way to check the purity of gold is to do the magnet test. Metals have magnetic properties. However, gold is a non-reactive and non-magnetic metal. If you keep real gold near a magnet, it will not move. However, if it sticks to the magnet, it means that the gold is not pure and is of low karat.
3. Acid Check
Acid test is one of the most reliable methods to check the purity of gold. Take hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and a stone. Rub the gold on the stone and add the mixture to it. If there is any other metal other than gold then the acid mix will dissolve it.
4.Floating test
Gold does not float in water because the atoms stick together and their density increases. However, if any other metal is added the gold will float.
5. Hallmark Logo
If you do not want to do any experiment then check the ISI hallmark to determine its purity. Hallmark is a government mark placed on gold jewellery, issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In the absence of hallmarking, questions may be raised about the purity of gold.
