A majority of these employees were in software services roles. They were let go as IBM focuses on emerging technology capabilities and reduces exposure to traditional services.

“This in accordance with IBM’s strategy to re-invent itself to better meet the changing requirements of our business and to pioneer new high value services,” an IBM spokesperson said, replying to ET’s queries on the development. IBM “remains committed to being an essential part of its (India’s) growth,” the spokesperson added.

There has been a reassessment of skill sets at IBM’s India offices and the company has been increasingly seeking to add talent in cloud, artificial intelligence and others emerging areas, sources at the company told ET. Quite a few employees are being re-skilled in emerging technology areas to meet demand, they said.
