IMD Alert: Cold wreaked havoc in these states, icy winds left everyone miserable; Meteorological Department alert issued

Weather Update: Cold wave continues in Punjab and Haryana. At many places the mercury has fallen below 5 degrees Celsius. There is morning fog in many parts of both the states.


These days cold is at its peak in North India. It is severe winter from Delhi-NCR to UP. Fog and icy winds have further increased the problems of the people. The minimum temperature in the national capital on Saturday was recorded at 3.6 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest temperature so far this season. Dense fog also remained in many areas of the capital. India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 3.9 degrees Celsius on Friday. According to the Railways, 18 trains coming to Delhi were delayed by one to six hours due to dense fog. IMD predicted the cold wave to continue on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi on Sunday are likely to be around 19 and 4 degrees Celsius.

Severe cold wave outbreak in Punjab, Haryana

Cold wave continues in Punjab and Haryana. At many places the mercury has fallen below 5 degrees Celsius. There is morning fog in many parts of both the states. People are facing problems in transportation. There is no possibility of getting relief from cold even on Sunday. Even today, the minimum temperature in different parts of Punjab and Haryana is expected to be around 5 degrees Celsius. Narnaul was the coldest place in Haryana on Saturday with a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius. Cold conditions persisted in Ambala too and the minimum temperature here was recorded at 6.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Karnal remained at 5.7 degrees Celsius. There was no respite from the cold conditions in Punjab also. The minimum temperatures in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala were recorded at 7.2, 4.9 and 5.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, was recorded at 6.8 degrees Celsius.

Some relief from severe cold in Madhya Pradesh

In Madhya Pradesh, people have now got respite from the harsh cold due to the disappearance of clouds as the humidity in the atmosphere reduced. The state has been experiencing severe cold for the past several days due to rain and cold winds. There was moderate to dense fog in the state capital Bhind, Gwalior, Morena and Mauganj districts. Light to moderate fog was observed in Datia, Shivpuri, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh and Niwari districts. Scientists of Bhopal Meteorological Department said that the weather pattern in the state is likely to remain dry. Due to sunshine in the state, the day temperature has started increasing. There is no effective weather system active at present. The weather pattern for the next 24 hours is likely to be dry with fog in the morning.

3.8 degree Celsius temperature in Bishunpur, Jharkhand

Jharkhand is in the grip of severe cold. On Saturday, the minimum temperature in Bishunpur of Gumla dropped to 3.8 degrees Celsius. After Bishunpur, Chatra Agricultural Development Center was the next place, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.1 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has predicted similar weather conditions in the state for the next 3 days. Abhishek Anand, in-charge of Ranchi Meteorological Center, said that due to western and north-western winds, the mercury has dropped by 3 to 7 degrees Celsius in the entire Jharkhand. He said that there is a possibility of increase in minimum temperature from January 15 and it is expected to increase by 2-3 degree Celsius. He said that there is a possibility of light rain in some parts of Jharkhand on January 17 and January 18.

Light snowfall in Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir

Fresh snowfall occurred in Gurez sector of Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. After this, the prolonged dry season in the valley has come to an end and the minimum temperature has increased by a few degrees at many places. A rise in minimum temperatures was observed due to cloudy sky in many parts of the valley. The night temperature was several degrees above normal. Jammu and Kashmir recorded 79 percent rainfall deficiency in December. There was no rain even in the first week of January. Kashmir is currently in the grip of Chilla Kalan, when there is severe cold for 40 days. During this time, cold wave prevails in the area and the temperature drops significantly, due to which water freezes in water sources as well as in pipes. During this period, the probability of snowfall is high and most areas, especially the higher altitude areas, receive heavy snowfall.
